Drip... drip... drip... round six!

I feel like these "day of" postings might be getting old. After all, how many times do you need to read about our SCCA routine? By now you get it... check-in at 9 a.m. for port placement and blood draw with Kelsey, followed by a consult with Charlie and (hopefully, depending on platelet count) infusion and pump hook-up on the way out the door late in the afternoon.

The good news is that Gidget's platelet count has rebounded to 87,000 – still low, but sufficient for treatment. So here we go with (drum roll, please!)... Round Six. YAY, CHEMO!!!

round six

They were running behind today, so we spent an hour in the lobby before being assigned an infusion bay... and Gidget didn't last long (the anti-nausea meds knock her for a loop):

I have been staring at this on the wall next to Tamara's desk (Dr. Whiting's scheduler) for nearly four months, so I asked for a copy:

what-cancer-cannot-do

True, true, true.

While I have your undivided attention, I thought I'd throw in a quick remodel update. We've done some major work on the house we bought in late-March, and we're finally starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel. Don (my brother-in-law) has done beautiful work as usual, and other various family members have pitched in, too, which has been great.

I'll put together a before and after "remodel page" for the blog one of these days, but for now I just wanted to post a couple pics and videos. Note: if you are subscribed to our blog and can't see the videos in your e-mail window, you'll need to view this post on the site: www.Acey.us.

We spared no expense on the appliances. Here's our stainless steel fridge:

man cave fridge

Kidding, I am! That's the fridge from the "man cave" at our rental house. That's where me and Acey keep the hard stuff -- water, soda and Otter Pops. I know, I know, we're a pretty tough crew.

Speaking of Acey, he had a ball during "demo week" knocking stuff down, breaking up sheet-rock and generally behaving like a nine-year-old. But as soon as we started putting things back together, the kid went frog hunting! Here's a couple videos from the demo stage:

I finished installing all the kitchen cabinet doors and drawers (which my dad assembled on his "vacation") late last night, and Don finished the bamboo flooring in the kitchen and dining room, so it's really starting to shine:

Gidget will check in from home this weekend to let you all know how she's doing.

  1. Hi Son - Rest assured that the reports on Chemo day are not getting old, other than wanting to get to no. 12. That will really be a "Yay Day".

Gidget sure looks pretty with her treatment blanket. Gidget, we pray for you every day and know that you are doing great. I hope you don't have to skip any more treatments so you will be through with it sooner.

The kitchen picture looks really great. I really like the sink and the new window together. Also the flooring and countertops really go well together.

I hope that the blog administrator allows this comment to be posted. I saw where Michelle's post was removed by the blog administrator. Probably for inappropriate content - is that right Michelle?

We love you all including our 'Little Man' Acey the frog hunter.

  2. Hi, Daddy
You know me - always the rebel! I'll try to keep things clean from now on! :-) Gidget, when I talked to Jay today he said that the 6th treatment went well- glad to hear it. I think of you so often- but especially on a "chemo" day. Sending all 3 of you lots of hugs. Love, Michelle
P.S. Did Acey tell you that he told me that if he wins the "round the world" golden ticket from his Willy Wonka chocolate bar Auntie Shell would be the one to go with him? I'm counting on it!

  4. Howdy!
Gidget told me she can sleep just fine on the floor or anywhere else. I bet even without the nausea meds you would be napping on that nice looking chair! I hope this next week is easier for you Gidge.

Jay the cancer poster said it all just right and I understand why it inspires you. You are doing an incredible job of taking care of Gidget, Acey and everything else (including remodeling until 11:00 at night and then getting up at at 5:30 a.m.!). I have really been touched by the praise that Gidget has had for you through all of these tough times. Her "rock" as she says, keep up the good work brother.

The pics of the kitchen are amazing. When I saw the kitchen pre-remodel I thought to myself...what did they do! Now it looks like something that should be in a magazine and I can't wait to see it in person! Love the window, the cabinets, the counters, the sink, really everything except that ugly "man cave" thing!

The video's of Acey "the Demo man" were so much fun to watch. He is one special little boy, frogs and all. I was honored that he kept one alive for me to see and then enjoyed releasing it with him into Acey's frog pond. Jay and Gidget I was really pleased to read that he has two new friends that live so close and share his love of frogs! That will make Acey's life fuller and yours more relaxed!
Still haven't heard from you about this next weekend so I better use the old fashioned system called a landline. I love all of you and will see you soon. Auntie Merd

  5. Love the updates on both treatments and house remodel. Glad you are half way through (with the treatments, that is). Not sure how long your remodel will last, but can't wait to see the before and after pics!
