Drip... drip... drip... round three

Here we go... we have settled in again at our home away from home. We caught the 9:40 ferry and checked in for blood work and "port placement" at 10:30. Waiting for Kelsey (Gidget's favorite nurse) to finish with her other patients put us a little behind schedule, but the comfort level Gidget has with Kelsey makes it worth the extra effort.

An 11 a.m. consult with Charlie (Dr. Whiting's assistant) was followed by an hour in the infusion floor lobby/waiting room. We were assigned infusion bay #12 (Gidget's lucky number) at 1 p.m. An hour of nausea meds (YAY! nausea meds!) and hydration gets us to this point... chemo, round #3:

Gidget got pretty sick (nauseous) last time, so we're approaching round three a little differently... Gidget skipped her morning coffee, ate some multi-grain toast for breakfast, and took a good dose of Lorazepam first thing in the morning (which she didn't do last time). That has been her miracle drug throughout the surgery, 2-week stay in the hospital, and the first couple rounds of chemo. We decided to get ahead and stay ahead of the nausea from here on out. We also found out that they didn't infuse a certain nausea medication during round 2 - it's a long-acting med that stays in her system for three days. She got it for round one (with no nausea), but not for round two (sick as a dog), so we're hoping that adding that med back into the mix, along with being careful with her diet and self-medicating on chemo days will do the trick.

Gidget will write more over the next couple days to let you all know how she's doing. She's sleeping like a baby now, so I'm going to go raid SCCA's well-stocked kitchen!

  1. Hi, Jay
Gidget sure looks peaceful in the last pic- sleeping like a baby indeed! It sounds like you have covered your bases on how to cut down on the nausea- thank goodness they make medications for that!

Gidget's determination to stick to a walking regime with fidelity has inspired me- I'm heading out for a walk as soon as I can wrap up at school. We have had endless beautiful weather here in Sitka this "winter"- if it can even be called winter.

Hope things continue to go smoothly. If you see Meridee, Fevzi and Tonka the Wonder Dog this weekend give them all a hug for me and tell them I said to give the three of you a kiss from me in return....maybe you will get lucky and Tonka will be the one to deliver the kisses! Love you three! Michelle

  2. Hi Gidget, It sounds like you took a lot more precautions to avoid the nausea.

Since I talked to Jay last night and you were waiting to be seated at a Mexican restaraunt after your treatment, it sounds like it payed off.

The double V for victory sign was clever. Even Winston Churchill didn't think of that.

We love you and our prayers are always with you.

  3. Hey Kiddo:
I am really happy to hear that round #3 has gone so much better then round #2 did. You are a real trooper to be out doing all of the things that you are doing with the two boys in your life. I like your attitude and drive!
I will see the three of you tomorrow for our "Sunday Lunch". Love Merd

  4. Sleeping Beauty with such great spirit! Lorazapam doesn't hurt either--it can be a wonder drug if used carefully. I use a similar medication for my PTSD. Maybe I'll see you this weekend.
    Love,
    Laurie
