After getting good news on the platelet front yesterday, we got up this morning and started our day with a purpose... to go garage-saling! Since Dr. Whiting decided to do round 10 on an off-week, all of the usual early-morning appointments were full, so we had the morning to kill before heading to the big city for treatment.
We hit a few sales on the way to the 10:25 ferry this morning, and then checked in around 11:30 for port placement and blood-work with Kelsey. As a bonus today, there were licensed massage therapists in the lobby giving free 10-minute hand massages to patients and caregivers. Gidget needed this in a major way.
We met with Dr. Whiting at 1 o'clock to go over blood-work, test results and new symptoms. No big news on the blood work, but Gidget told Dr. Whiting about her fairly substantial increase in peripheral neuropathy. She can't feel the outside of each of her feet or the first 2-3 toes. Her fingers have become increasingly numb, and now when she extends her arms in front of her, her hands tingle (like when your foot falls asleep) and she loses all feeling in her fingers. Not good. Dr. Whiting initially said that it was time to drop the Oxaliplatin from Gidget's regimen entirely, but then he said that we could try dropping it just for round 10. If the neuropathy symptoms improve in two weeks, they'll add the Oxaliplatin back to the regimen at a reduced dose fore the final two rounds.
Acey scored some clay in the gift shop, and immediately set about creating creatures pulled from his wild and crazy imagination. He gave Dr. Whiting one of them for his office, and pinned another to the bulletin board in the exam room. But he kept version 1.0 because "the artist always keeps the original," or so I'm told. Acey wanted me to let you all know that "Happy is his name, and laughter is his game!"
We checked in for infusion at 2 o'clock and were assigned Dan for Gidget's infusion nurse. We met Dan one Sunday a while back when we were here to have Gidget's pump disconnected, and he's a really neat guy. He designs/sews his own scrubs... very cool.
So, it's official, here we go with round 10... YAY, CHEMO!
Since Gidget isn't getting the Oxaliplatin drip (that's the all-day part of the regimen), this was a shorter day than usual. Dan gave here a quick shot of long-lasting anti-nausea meds and (after waiting and waiting for the chemo drugs to be delivered from the pharmacy), he hooked up her pump, and sent us on our way. We're out of here!

Garage shopping is a lot of fun--glad you could have some before round #10. Only 2 more to go!! Again, I want to say how great it was seeing you and Acey on Thursday. He is getting so grown up!!

Gidget, I'm so happy you have round 10 under your belt. That is a great milestone. Garage saling with you three was a lot of fun today - I'm in awe of how strong you are- living life to the fullest and packing that chemo pump along for the ride. Acey I love the clay people and can just imagine the crazy stories you came up with for them. You keep us all laughing and are the best medicine of all for your mom!! Jay, I love the pics (from an earlier post) of Acey outlined on the beach and the one of him on the couch- great coloring. Gidge, I've truly enjoyed spending so much with you over the last month. I'm glad I got to go to your 9th treatment- it gives me a better understanding of what you are going through. Jay, your are such an awesome support for Gidge- I am so proud of you!! Sure love you three! Michelle

Cool well that one was published. I have typed out three attempts this evening and keep getting an error message.
ReplyDeleteHey Gidge, it was so nice to see you today for our late lunch. I am hoping with all of my heart that the neuropathy will improve over the next couple of weeks. I have read all of the medical links that the two of you put on your blog over the last few months. They are really helpful for all of us to understand what you are dealing with. Keep up the good job on the blog and be easy on yourself every single chance that you get!
Jay and Acey, it was a blast as always to get to see you for our very late lunch! I had the honor of meeting "Happy" and he is even cuter in person than in the pics! Acey you have some talent in those little fingers! I can only imagine the stories that must have been made up about those little creatures!
Okay you three take care and be well. When I get back from England we would love to have Acey come up to the cabin for a couple of days!
Love Merd
Jay, Acey & Gidget - I have to agree with what others have said about you. You are all terrific!!
ReplyDeleteAcey, those are great clay models. I don't blame you for keeping Happy. Maybe when Grandma Joyce and I are up there you could sculpt an "Acey Original". We would love to have one to display here in Texas.
Jay, you are doing a great job as husband and father and have been so great in supporting and encouraging your family. I am very proud of you.
Gidget, you hang in and finish strong. You have been unbelievably strong through all of this. We pray for you every day and it is always for your total well being. I am very proud of you as my daughter-in-law.
We love you - Papa/Ed/Dad & Grandma Joyce/Joyce
Thanks for the update. Sorry, I haven't opened this e-mail account for awhile.
ReplyDeleteI pray the tests and treatment went well and that you are on the road to a full recovery !
The concert sounded wonderful for all !!
Hugs
