Gidget's platelet count was 91,000 on Thursday. Wow! That must be some sort of record. Forgoing the Oxaliplatin push for round ten must have done the trick. Gidget's brother Sean is in town visiting, so he came with us today to support Gidget and to see how all this chemo stuff works. As usual, we requested Kelsey for port placement and blood-work.
It's tough to get an accurate read on Gidget's peripheral neuropathy. Some days she feels better, some worse, some the same. She is still dropping things (especially her cell phone!) and she's occasionally unsteady on her feet. No matter... Charlie said that any loss of functionality at all pretty much means the end of the Oxaliplatin regimen. This is for good reason; they don't want the nerve damage to become permanent.
We had Charlie ask Dr. Whiting to add the bolus of 5FU back to Gidget's regimen for rounds 11 and 12. They dropped the bolus (an intense push given in the clinic of the same drug that's in the weekend chemo pump) fairly early in the treatment process because it was trashing Gidget's platelets. Charlie tracked down Dr. Whiting, but he wouldn't go for it, at least not for this round. He thinks the most important thing at this point is to stay on schedule for the final two rounds. Dr. Whiting said we can talk about adding the bolus for the final round.
Since they aren't doing the Oxaliplatin or the 5FU push today, they only needed to infuse a dose of leucovorin and hook Gidget up to her weekend pump before sending us on our way... YAY, CHEMO!
We're headed to the Eastlake Bar and Grill for lunch. Love that place!

Hi Kiddo:
ReplyDeleteVery cool that round number 11 is over and that you only have one more to go! That must be a huge relief and I am proud of how well you have handled not only the Chemo but a very hectic period in your life as it was going on. All of it testifies to your strength and character!
Keep up the good work Lady.
Love Meridee
91,000- yahoo! So glad round 11 is behind you (or will be by tomorrow). The three of you, along with Auntie Merd and Tavier, have been on the hearts and minds of those of us at the Beach-Friend reunion. Despite missing all of you we have been having a great time. You wouldn't believe how grown up our 2nd cousins have become...and all of us "first" cousins are aging gracefully but aging we are! The reunion setting is wonderful and it has been so great to connect with everyone. Grandmommie along with everyone else sends their love. Love from me too, Michelle
ReplyDeleteWhat a good looking family!! Only 1 more treatment to go!! Then we can all celebrate!! I have the permanent nerve damage that Gidget is expierencing, but not so extreme. I'm glad to hear that hers can be corrected. Keep smiling Gidget--I know you can beat this!! Keep in touch!
ReplyDeleteLove,
Laurie
Hi Gidget, Jay and Acey.
ReplyDeleteWe were so relieved to find out that your blood count was good and you were able to get #11 in. Gidget, it was nice that you had your brother to lend you a hand.
We certainly did miss all three of you at the reunion, but knew for some time that you would have to miss this one. The consensus seemed to be that the location was good and that it would be a good spot for a repeat. I have pictures that I'll leave in my camera, so you can see those when we get up there.
Love you all - Ed/Dad/Papa and Joyce/Grandma Joyce
