We have gotten pretty close to Kelsey over the past eight months, so the odds of seeing some tears when she and Gidget said their good-byes were pretty high. Luckily, we realized that we'll see Kelsey (with Acey) on Sunday when we come back to get Gidget's pump disconnected, so it wasn't too traumatic.
We met with Dr. Whiting at 11 o'clock to go over the final treatment, test results, and what to expect going forward. Since Gidget's platelets are right at the cut-off point (and because of her continued peripheral neuropathy), Dr. Whiting decided to skip the Oxaliplatin again for this round. This was expected, and Dr. Whiting is pleased with Gidget's overall regimen. He said this is a day to celebrate like a birthday - especially since some patients don't make it through all 12 rounds (due to intense side effects). So, celebrate we will!
The post-chemo plan looks like this:
- CT Scan on August 27, followed by a visit with Dr. Whiting to review results the following week.
- Colonoscopy sometime within the next month (they haven't scheduled that one yet, so I don't have a firm date) followed by another review with Dr. Whiting.
- Assuming the first two exams look good (and we're planning on good news!), we'll come back for blood-work every three months, and a CT Scan every six months.
Acey's amazing teacher is spending the day with her class at the beach today, so Acey had to choose between bringing Mom to chemo... or going to the beach party he has been looking forward to all summer. Seems like a no-brainer to me, but he was really torn. He's a sensitive little thing and he really wanted to be there for Gidget's final round. We convinced him that the most important thing is the pump disconnect on Sunday - that actually signals the end of round 12 - so he was in good spirits when we dropped him off at Anthony's house early this morning.
I'm sure Gidget will write more about this later, but I just wanted to thank everyone for their support over the past 8-10 months. Obviously, we're not out of the woods yet, but completing round 12 is a really important step. It's hard to believe that Gidget's first round of chemo was in January. On the one hand that seems like such a long time ago. On the other hand this has been such a whirlwind journey that it often felt like our lives were flashing by us at dizzying speed. Anyway, we wouldn't have made it this far without all of your support, encouragement, cards, prayers and positive vibes. Thank you!
P.S. My wife rocks! I love her so much, and I couldn't be any more proud of her for the way she has handled all of this...

Hi Gidget & Jay - Hooray! We are so happy that you have had the last treatment. Joyce and I are so proud of both of you as well as our Grandson in how you have shared this situation in your lives.
ReplyDeleteIt will be our continuing promise to support you the rest of the way in your journey. We will continue to pray for the three of you daily, and I know that God has great things in store for you.
It is very appropriate that the two of you shared the final 12 sign equally. There are many, many of us who would have loved to share that sign with you, Gidget. I just want to see the final sign, the V for Victory that I teased you about on treatment 2.
We Love you very much - Ed/Papa/Dan & Joyce/Grandma Joyce
How wonderful.....# 12 is here and over with. All 3 of you are very brave and I admire each of you. Gidget, you are an exceptional lady. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Keep us all posted. Love and prayers, Joan
ReplyDeleteJay and Gidget, Yippee! Hip, Hip, Hurray! I am so happy that round 12 is behind you. You are both an inspiration to me and many others. You have handled this whole thing with grace and love and I am so proud of both of you.
ReplyDeleteThanks for keeping all of us in the loop with this blog- it makes the waiting process (especially for those of us living thousands of miles away) easier to bear.
Jay, I just love the picture of both of you holding up 6 fingers- like Daddy said that seems really fitting as you have definitely gone through this as a team.
It is so sweet that Acey is so sensitive and such a great cheerleader. I hope he had fun at the beach and I'm glad he chose to enjoy that event- I know he was looking forward to it. I am so impressed with his teacher- I don't know many that will plan multiple summer events and give up their personal time during their break- that is a true testament to the love and connection she has to her students.
I know you will all three be happy campers (which is, of course, an understatement!) when the final pump is disconnected today.
I love all three of you a ton and a bunch! Michelle
I'm so glad to hear that Gidget was able to get round 12 overwith. I will prayer for you about the CT Scan and whatever tests you have to go through these next few weeks. I admire how you have handled this as a family!! Let me know if there is anything I can ever do. I love you all very much!

Jay and Gidget - Yahoo!!! You did it, Gidget - finishing the last session of chemo - you are truly an awesome inspiration! And thanks so much to both of you for taking all of us along on your brave journey - keeping us informed and sharing your thoughts and experiences! So what will the big celebration be? You deserve to do something spectacular - above and beyond all the usual fun that you three always have had together throughout the past eight months =-). Gidget, Jay and the Ace Man:
ReplyDeleteI can't even imagine what a long road this has been for all of you. We blog readers don't see or live the daily ups and downs of fighting with cancer. Gidge you are one tough lady and I admire the inner strength that has brought you past round 12 not only with hope but with a wonderful and fun sense of humour. No doubt having your goofy Acey and Jay have helped along the way!
Love Auntie Merd
