It is a bit nerve-wracking, actually, but the staff here at SCCA has been amazing as usual. Everyone is so friendly -- explaining everything, every step of the way, and offering us everything under the sun (or at least on the 5th floor)... warm blankets, snacks, drinks, etc. Apparently, the husband gets the royal treatment, too, so I just powered down two PB&J "Uncrustables," which I'm sure I didn't need!
We checked in at 8:40 for Gidget's blood draw/lab work. Then off to meet with one of the doctors to review the blood work and confirm that all the levels were within range to start the chemo. An hour off for lunch, then up to the 5th floor for her first infusion.
She will be hooked up until 3:30 here at the clinic (that's about 4 hours total), and then they will hook up a pump to infuse an additional chemo drug at home over the course of 46 hours. We'll come back to SCCA on Sunday afternoon so they can disconnect the pump.
So far, so good. Gidget is sitting on the bed, happily knitting away. So far she says she doesn't feel anything from the chemo drugs (the anti-nausea meds made her a little loopy). I guess if there are going to be any side effects, they will show up a couple days after the treatment. We'll keep our fingers crossed.... more later.

Who else but Gidge can look marvelous while hooked up to a chemo drip? Thanks for keeping us all updated.
ReplyDeleteTerese,
ReplyDeleteThe nurse loaded me up with anti-nausea meds. The real test will be to see how I feel after the 42 hour pack they hooked me up to to bring home. It runs into my port and runs through the night. I will have it removed on Sunday. It is my understanding that is when the "fun" will begin. I already have the tingling sensations in my hands, and made the mistake to put my hands under cold water. Which then make them feel like they have frozen. I can't drink anything cold, or my throat "FEELS" like it is closing up. Even standing in front of the fridge will do the same thing. Very strange.
Hi Gidge, you look good and having Jay there to make funnies will help make this journey much smoother. If PB&J is all it takes to make him happy, stay stocked up ! Peanut Butter is a good source of protein Jay(yeah, right). I'm going to be with Aunt Mariln for three months, can't wait, I miss my "Buddy".I leave March 3rd and return the end of May, hope I don't come back with that Joisey accent. Well Shweety we think of you all daily and thank you for sharing your journey with us, let's make it a smooth one, O.K.? We love you and think of you daily. If there's anything we can do in ANY WAY , don't hesitate to ask, WE'RE HERE FOR YOU.
ReplyDeleteLove You,
Aunt Kath
I'm really glad that things are going smoothly! A "Groupie" can survive anything. Look at me---I'm back to normal. Can I come and visit you during your next chemo tx? Too much to ask?

Hi Gidget - We must have goofed earlier. Joyce and I thought we posted a comment earlier, but apparently did something wrong.
ReplyDeleteJoyce said to tell you that we are both thinking of you and we keep you in our prayers constantly.
You sure look pretty to be hooked up to all that paraphanalia. Write and let us know if you received the package that we forwarded from the lady who had undergone the same situation that you are in.
We love you - Ed and Joyce

Dear Gidget, Jay and Acey - Just wanted to drop a note to let you guys know that all of you are in my thoughts and prayers. My mom told me of your surgery, Gidget, before Christmas and so I have been thinking about you. I'm glad to know there is a way to be in touch via this blog - and to know of your progress through chemo. I also look forward to reading more about my second cousin (? not sure how these things work :) little Acey. I've heard so many wonderful stories about him from Uncle Ed and Aunt Louise now that we're in Texas. Love to you all from our family, now in Austin.
ReplyDeleteGidget,
ReplyDeleteHello from your Texas family! So "Hey ya'll!"
I want you to know that i will be praying for your comfort and healing. Our God is mighty and great and he will provide. Poppa Ed has been keep us all posted and I hope that your first round of Chemo went smoothly and you are not experiencing side effects. I love your blog and your pictures are awesome! I'll talk to you soon!

Hey Gidget!!!
ReplyDeleteHowdy from Your extended family in Fort Worth, TX. Alison and I want you to know that you are in our thoughts and prayers as you continue to battle. We are so encouraged by the good reports and we hope to see you in July in fit condition and celebrating a victory!
Weather here has taken a turn to the cold side, but we are fortunate here in the DFW metroplex. We have missed the ice and rough stuff that Oklahoma and West Texas were hit with. Barry said there was 13 inches of snow in Clovis NM where he lives.
We are mourning the end of our Cowboys season just short of making the Conference championship, but hope abounds that they will be back next season ready to claim a spot in SUPER BOWL 45 that will be played in the New Cowboys Stadium just five minutes from where we live.
Give our love to Jay and Acey and all of my sweet girl cousins when you see them. We are in your corner, Girl! Stay strong in the fight!
Love, Bobby and Alison
