Gidget didn't get her blood work done on Thursday this time, so we were kinda flying blind this week... hoping her platelet count would be high enough to let her get chemo. Michelle (my sister) is a principal in Sitka, Alaska. She's in town for summer break, and she wanted to come with us today for support and to see what Gidget goes through every two weeks. We checked in at 9 a.m. for port placement and blood draw with Kelsey.
We met with Charlie at 10 a.m. to go over Gidget's blood work, side effects, etc. and (as usual) answer all of our questions.
Gidget has experienced an increase in peripheral neuropathy over the last three treatments, so Charlie uses a tuning fork to test the sensation in her hands and feet. They worry about this type of trend because, if it gets bad enough, the nerve damage can be permanent. Gidget is nowhere near that point yet, and they would probably further reduce her oxaliplatin infusion if they get too worried about it.
Gidget's platelet count is 71,000. The threshold for chemo is supposed to be 75,000, but Dr. Whiting approved her treatment for today, so... here we go with round nine. YAY, CHEMO!
After they hooked Gidget up to her chemo pump, we went over to Antika to visit Tonka... er, I mean, to visit my sister Meridee and brother-in-law Fevzi. Tonka now tips the scales at a nimble 84 pounds... at seven months old! What a character!

Hi Gidget, Michelle and Jay -
ReplyDeleteSure glad to hear that the treatment went through all right. Gidget, it must be a real relief to get your treatment count down to three to go.
Jay, the cap looks a lot like the one you sent me a picture of with Acey and you at the M's game.
Michelle, I'm glad you could be there with them. Sure look forward to seeing you next Thursday.
We love you all - Ed/Daddy/Dad and Joyce
I glad you made it through the next round!! The dog is so cute!!! I am now living in a Condo alone. It gets lonely, but I'll get used to it.
ReplyDeleteKeep in touch!
Prayers and love,
Laurie
Hi Gidget and Jay-
ReplyDeleteThanks for continuing to keep us updated during this whole process. Just think 3/4 of all the treatments are done, yes! Though, of course, we wish this wasn't necessary at all, you have both handled it with such grace and dignity - to the very best of your ability. Gidget, it was such fun to shop for Melissa's wedding with you, Michelle, and Meridee on Thursday. Melissa and I had a great time! How cool that you are always out there living your life as close to normal (and almost identically)as you have have and enjoying every bit of it - wedding shopping with your neice,
included =-). We love you lots - see you at Tav's wedding next weekend. Melonie
Great job Gidget,
ReplyDeleteMallory, Kassidy, Trish, and I are all proud of you. Keep strong cousin. Love you
Travis
Wow! Look, I'm famous! You can just forward my fan mail =)I've been so impressed with your strength and kindness towards me and to each other. Keep up the good work! -Kelsey
ReplyDeleteHey Jay and Gidget:
ReplyDeleteGidget, each time I spend any time with you I am so pleased to see how relaxed and truly happy you are. It seems an odd thing to say because of your cancer but you really seem to be so much happier and relaxed now then you were before.
For those of you that haven't seen her in awhile she laughs and giggles like a teenage girl but also keeps up that sharp intellect at the same time. I am VERY impressed with the way the three of you have handled your cancer.
Jay, Gidget and Michelle came to see me and Fevzi at the store but were greeted by an extra large friendly lump of dog called Tonka! Don't let Jay's story fool you!
Love Merd
